Welcome to the Jungle!

We have arrived! We left Piura yesterday afternoon and began our ¨adventurous¨ bus ride to Tarapoto- the start of the jungle! Let us tell you a bit about Road Rules. First and most importantly, there are no road rules. For those of you that have had the pleasure of travelling in such areas I am sure you will greatly appreciate our commentary. For everyone else, please close your eyes for a moment and let us bring you into our chaos! Noise- constant horns, whistles, shouting, and pushy drivers attempting to edge their way in front of, in between, or on top of the vehicle you are occupying. Our bus yesterday was overbooked, thus local Peruvians were standing and eventually lying in the aisles- making the trek to the bathroom in the wee hours of the morning quite an event. The bus ride was 16 hours long. Fortunately the lack of airconditioning was overcome by the fact that we were able to sit by the window- the Peruvians in the aisles felt the same way, and if you weren´t paying attention they would be in your lap trying to take just one long breath of dank jungle air. Only one flat tire, one live goat in the luggage hold, live chickens across the seat, and several river crossings to account for. At one point in the wee hours of the morning Greg looked over at me quite wide eyes to inform me that we were crossing a big river- 3 feet deep and twice as wide as the Little Salmon (30 yards). We were both quite relieved to make it across successfully, though couldn´t help but wonder how the poor goat and our luggage- which we were quite sure he had indulged upon during the journey- had faired.

Now let us take you to the market. This experience is a profusion of bright sights including various delectable fruits and market goods, and intense smells that make you gasp and gag at the same time. Imagine the sight of a butchered beef being literally pulled out of the trunk of a car! No need to wrap it, as the flavor of gasoline and motor oil only intensify the unique cuisine experience!

Now we head off into the jungle- the land of flowing lush green hills and chocolate brown rivers now being filled by the rainy season. What lies ahead? You will simply have to check back in so that we can update you with our wild adventures!

Much Love-

Jess & Greg

The description of your bus ride sounds like a movie! Likewise, the picture of the market looks like a travel booklet. Sounds like you are enjoying your trip. We had 2 feet of snow yesterday here in Los Alamos!
